Heritage Planning

Julia served two terms on the City of Vancouver’s Heritage Commission (2015-2018), and the Vancouver School Board’s Heritage Advisory Subcommittee (2016-2018) and has served as an advisor to regional and provincial heritage organizations (various years).

Julia's views on heritage are holistic and inclusive—she is passionate about the built environment and its capacity to shape collective experiences. Paramount to her interpretation of place is the understanding that the land contains layers of histories and values that are often in conflict. Her academic research interrogated how the exclusion of intangible cultural heritage from municipal heritage programs creates barriers to the fulfillment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action

I have lived and worked on the unceded ancestral territories of the xÊ·mÉ™θkwÉ™y̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and sÉ™lilwÉ™taɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations for the past 20 years and that understanding is something I carry into all my work as I endeavour to be a better neighbour, visitor and uninvited guest to these lands I am privileged enough to call home.
